			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>my little brother is 15 and i think he is looking for ways to lose weight. he isnt very over weight like you wouldnt think he would even be if you saw him but i guess he is looking for a way for his stomach to look thinner and upper chest. he wants to lose about im guessing 10-20 pounds in a healthy way and ideas or suggestions and tips on how to appraoch this.<br />
<br />Eat less junk food. Do some cardio exercises like running or jumping jacks, things like that. And do ab work: sit-ups, crunches, leg lifts all that. And he&#8217;s gotta do it a lot. 3 times a week at least.</p>

<br />As long as people believe that a low fat diet is healthy, then there will be rampant obesity &amp; cardiovascular disease.</p>
<p>U.S. government guidelines were changed 35 years ago to suggest we lower our fat intake &amp; increase our carb intake. American society followed these recommendations &amp; lowered their fat intake by 11% &amp; increased their carb consumption. In this same time frame obesity, diabetes, heart disease are all at epidemic levels. Through their direct effects on insulin &amp; blood sugar, refined carbohydrates are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease &amp; diabetes.</p>
<p>A low carbohydrate diet is a high fat diet. The protein should only be a little higher than adequate. Although it is completely possible to live on a fat/protein only diet for long term (as proven by research done in a hospital setting) it becomes boring fairly quickly. Luckily many vegetables &amp; some fruits, nuts &amp; seeds are low in carbs &amp; greatly expand the diet. Most long term low carbers eat as many, if not more non starchy vegetables than vegetarians.</p>
<p>Glucose is the bodies preferred fuel (if you want to get technical, it actually burns alcohol most efficiently, but that doesn&#8217;t make it any healthier for the body than carbs), the body can convert 100% of carbs, 58% of protein &amp; 10% of dietary fat into glucose. The body can also be fueled by fat (dietary fat &amp; fat cells) but only in the absence of carbs. Your brain actually prefers* to be fueled by ketones (part of the fat burning process), it does require glucose also, but glucose can be easily converted from excess protein if needed or dietary fat.</p>
<p>Plaque build up in the arteries is more attributable to carb consumption than dietary fats, which seems to be the conclusion of the following study. Carb consumption raises triglycerides &amp; VLDL (bad cholesterol). Fats raise the HDL (good cholesterol). High triglyceride levels &amp; low HDL levels are an indicator of plaque &amp; glycation &#8211; the precursors to a heart attack &amp; heart disease.</p>

<p>Postprandial lipoproteins, you&#8217;d think, would be plentiful after ingesting a large quantity of fat, since fat must be absorbed via chylomicrons into the bloodstream. But it&#8217;s carbohydrates that figure most prominently in determining the pattern and magnitude of postprandial triglycerides and lipoproteins. Much of this effect develops by way of de novo lipogenesis, the generation of new lipoproteins like VLDL after carbohydrate ingestion.</p>
<p>Gary Taubes who wrote &quot;Good Calories, Bad Calories&quot; spent 7 years going through all the studies over the last century &amp; dividing up the real science from the faulty science &amp; concluded that low carb was the best way to control insulin levels which balances out other hormones &amp; allows the body to function properly.</p>
<p>His main points are:</p>
<p>1. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease or any other chronic disease.</p>
<p>2. The problem is refined carbs in diet, their effect on insulin secretion &amp; the hormonal regulation of homeostasis.</p>
<p>3. Sugars &#8211; sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup specifically &#8211; are particularly harmful, the combination of fructose &amp; glucose simultaneously elevates insulin levels &amp; overload liver with carbs.</p>
<p>4. Through their direct effects on insulin &amp; blood sugar, refined carbs, starches, sugars are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease &amp; diabetes. They are likely dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer&#8217;s &amp; other diseases.</p>
<p>5. Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating.</p>
<p>6. Consuming excess calories does not cause us to grow fatter.</p>
<p>7. Fattening &amp; obesity are caused by an imbalance in the hormonal regulation of adipose tissue &amp; fat metabolism. Fat synthesis &amp; storage exceed the mobilization of fat from adipose tissue &amp; its subsequent oxidation.</p>
<p>8. Insulin is the primary regulator of fat storage. When insulin levels fall, we release fat from fat tissue.</p>
<p>9. By stimulating insulin secretion, carbs make us fat.</p>
<p>10. By driving fat accumulation, carbs also increase hunger &amp; decrease the amount of energy we expend in metabolism &amp; physical activity.</p>

<br />Weight loss is an overall process and there are no magic answers.  Pay no attention to weight loss supplements and pills and all the latest fads.  You need to think about many factors but most of them are related to issues we&#8217;ve known about for a very long time.  There are many sensible things you can do that will make a tremendous difference over the long term if you need to lose weight. It can be done in a healthy way. This is what has worked for me.</p>
<p>Keeping a food journal really does help. It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why.</p>
<p>Make a few additional small changes &#8211; walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days. Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer. Buy one piece of exercise equipment to have at home and be strict with yourself about using it. Sometimes you can find mini-steppers or exercise bikes at second hand stores and thrift stores for just a few dollars.</p>
<p>Start a weight lifting routine.  Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall. Even if you can&#8217;t get to the gym you can work out at home using things around the house.  Invest in a good weight training book.  The Dummies series actually has a good one.   </p>
<p>In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts. Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy. </p>
<p>Make your portion sizes smaller. Use a smaller plate &#8211; in our society we have become accustomed to thinking that we need a large plate of food at every meal, and we don&#8217;t. About quarter of your plate of food should be protein and at least half of it should be veggies. </p>
<p>Learn to count calories. At your current weight and activity level, you may possibly need about 2000 calories or more to maintain your current weight. So you will lose weight at a reasonable and healthy rate if you cut back to about 1600 or 1700 calories a day. </p>
<p>Eat small amounts frequently, rather than three large meals. Never skip breakfast. Include some protein in your breakfast. It will help get you through the day.</p>
<p>Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses of water a day, and more if it is very hot, if you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely, and eliminate fruit juices. Fruit juices have too many calories, so get your vitamins from fresh fruit, not the juice. You will begin to see changes in your body. </p>
<p>Vary your routines.  Don&#8217;t eat the same number of calories every day (vary your calories from 1400 a day to 1900 or 2000 some days), eat a variety of foods, and do different kinds and amounts of exercise.  You will lose weight much more efficiently if you mix things up from time to time so that your body doesn&#8217;t adjust to any one routine.</p>
<p>An area that many people overlook is getting enough sleep.  You are much more likely to overeat or to binge eat if you are tired and not well rested, so get enough sleep.</p>

Maybe when you get home,,. instead of walking in just go round the block once. Or take the stairs instead of that elevator. Once a week, skip dinner but have a piece of celery instead. Whatever you do, stick to it, then when it has become routine, add more.</p>

<br />I find that drinking water helps a lot in shedding weight. It isn&#8217;t so much the water but the lack of sugar that&#8217;s in drinks that does it.<br />
I also walk whenever I can. Walking is very good for losing weight, so is eating less,.. Try it.</p>

So, let&#8217;s say I can add that later. In the meantime, what can I do to shrink my gut that is healthy, works, well, and works as fast as possible?<br />
<br />In order to shed some weight a little effort is necessary at first.,, then it will come as a habit. Whenever you can, walk. Give up drinking anything but water. Once or twice a week, go swimming at the local pool.</p>

<br />Eat less calories than you are burning off so that you can lose them.   We gain for only one reason.  We take in more calories than we burn.   So either burn more by exercising and keeping more active and making muscles which burn hotter and faster than fat does in our bodies, or eat less so that your caloric intake is not more than what you are daily burning off.   Do both and find great success in losing weight.  Walking will definitely help better than any exercise for losing tummy fat plus it pushes our metabolism up a lot of knotches to help us burn through the day.  You can couple that with a 30 minute arobic routine a few times a week and see great results.   Also, leave the breads and pastas alone.   Its not fat that makes you fat.  Its carbs that make you fat because they turn to sugar and sugar turns to fat.  So cut out the bad carbs and sugars and eat good carbs and good sugars which are fruits and veggies.   All white veggies are bad carbs so switch potatoes for sweet potatoes and eat broccoli instead of caulaflower.   Then watch your intake and you have to lose.  The reason that is the truest way to lose is because you are not doing any diet.  Instead you are changing your eating habits for life.   Eating lean meats, fruits and veggies is the best way to keep fit, lose weight and stay healthy.</p>

 meeting some people for the first time  in about 2 months so id like lose at least 20 or pounds by then if that&#8217;s at all possible.  the help is greatly appreciated, and I am a kind of picky eater and diets just don&#8217;t work for me. i exercise regularly but i just seem to gain weight<br />
<br />Bring balance to the force. If you eat the same foods over and over again, you’re going to get bored – unless they’re foods you really, really like. Feel free to change it up – keep your tongue happy. Balance carbs with proteins with fats, though. If you have more of one nutrient for one meal, try more of another nutrient for the next. And for heaven’s sake, don’t just shop in the “diet” section of the store. You can still (likely) eat the same things you’ve always eaten, just not so much of them at any one time.</p>
