As long as people believe that a low fat diet is healthy, then there will be rampant obesity & cardiovascular disease.

U.S. government guidelines were changed 35 years ago to suggest we lower our fat intake & increase our carb intake. American society followed these recommendations & lowered their fat intake by 11% & increased their carb consumption. In this same time frame obesity, diabetes, heart disease are all at epidemic levels. Through their direct effects on insulin & blood sugar, refined carbohydrates are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes.

A low carbohydrate diet is a high fat diet. The protein should only be a little higher than adequate. Although it is completely possible to live on a fat/protein only diet for long term (as proven by research done in a hospital setting) it becomes boring fairly quickly. Luckily many vegetables & some fruits, nuts & seeds are low in carbs & greatly expand the diet. Most long term low carbers eat as many, if not more non starchy vegetables than vegetarians.

Glucose is the bodies preferred fuel (if you want to get technical, it actually burns alcohol most efficiently, but that doesn’t make it any healthier for the body than carbs), the body can convert 100% of carbs, 58% of protein & 10% of dietary fat into glucose. The body can also be fueled by fat (dietary fat & fat cells) but only in the absence of carbs. Your brain actually prefers* to be fueled by ketones (part of the fat burning process), it does require glucose also, but glucose can be easily converted from excess protein if needed or dietary fat.

Plaque build up in the arteries is more attributable to carb consumption than dietary fats, which seems to be the conclusion of the following study. Carb consumption raises triglycerides & VLDL (bad cholesterol). Fats raise the HDL (good cholesterol). High triglyceride levels & low HDL levels are an indicator of plaque & glycation – the precursors to a heart attack & heart disease.

study from the Oxford group examining the postprandial (after-eating) effects of a low-fat vs. low-carbohydrate diet. (Roberts R et al, 2008)

Postprandial lipoproteins, you’d think, would be plentiful after ingesting a large quantity of fat, since fat must be absorbed via chylomicrons into the bloodstream. But it’s carbohydrates that figure most prominently in determining the pattern and magnitude of postprandial triglycerides and lipoproteins. Much of this effect develops by way of de novo lipogenesis, the generation of new lipoproteins like VLDL after carbohydrate ingestion.

Gary Taubes who wrote "Good Calories, Bad Calories" spent 7 years going through all the studies over the last century & dividing up the real science from the faulty science & concluded that low carb was the best way to control insulin levels which balances out other hormones & allows the body to function properly.

His main points are:

1. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease or any other chronic disease.

2. The problem is refined carbs in diet, their effect on insulin secretion & the hormonal regulation of homeostasis.

3. Sugars – sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup specifically – are particularly harmful, the combination of fructose & glucose simultaneously elevates insulin levels & overload liver with carbs.

4. Through their direct effects on insulin & blood sugar, refined carbs, starches, sugars are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes. They are likely dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer’s & other diseases.

5. Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating.

6. Consuming excess calories does not cause us to grow fatter.

7. Fattening & obesity are caused by an imbalance in the hormonal regulation of adipose tissue & fat metabolism. Fat synthesis & storage exceed the mobilization of fat from adipose tissue & its subsequent oxidation.

8. Insulin is the primary regulator of fat storage. When insulin levels fall, we release fat from fat tissue.

9. By stimulating insulin secretion, carbs make us fat.

10. By driving fat accumulation, carbs also increase hunger & decrease the amount of energy we expend in metabolism & physical activity.

What is a good healthty fat burning diet?

April 3rd, 2010

I’m currently about 183lbs in the morning.. my body fat calculator says I’m at 20% body fat. I only have chub around the mid section. I exercise often and take hydroxycut. I am not dieting and would like to know a healthy fat burning diet. I heard something about chicken and rice? does anyone have suggestions?I want to get to 10% bodyfat. Or close.

green tea as much as you can consume each day will speed up the metabolism. Also eat a healthy diet + 5 pieces of fruit and veg per day.

Is it unhealthy for growing teens to go on calorie-restricting diets and cut out certain foods from the diet?

April 3rd, 2010

Is it unhealthy for growing teens to go on calorie-restricting diets and cut out certain foods from the diet? What are some possible consequences if a teen was to do this?

Yes, limiting calories is about the worse thing you can do as a teen. Not only do you need the calories for your growth and nourishment, but cutting calories can also mean cutting out vitamins and minerals that you would have otherwise eaten had you not went on the calorie-restrictive diet.

Consequences would most commonly be stress, anxiety, tiredness, and irritability from lack of food, and they may even develop some vitamin or mineral deficiencies over the long run.

What causes weight gain when being on the birthcontrol pill?

April 3rd, 2010

I just started taking the birthcontrol pill and I am so afraid to gain weight, the nurses told me the reason women gain weight during their birth control pill is because their appetite gets bigger, but I have also heard that it’s the hormones in the pills that make you gain weight. How do I know which is correct? Thanks

Both. The hormones cause you to have a bigger appetite which cause you to eat more which causes you to gain weight. The way birth control works is by tricking your body into thinking your pregnant. That’s why a lot of women wonder if they’re pregnant even tho they’re on both control.

Effective way to lose weight for teens?

April 3rd, 2010

I’m 16 and this is my senior year in high school. I’m overweight and I want to lose a few pounds for prom. I don’t want anything drastic, but maybe 20-30 lbs around springtime. That seems to be realistic for me. And I’ve always been deemed heavier for my age by my doctor. But it seems that right when I started sprouting boobs, I gained weight.

I don’t have any access whatsoever to gym equipment. They’re expensive and we’re poor and I don’t live near a gym. I have a bike, but it’s cold out.
Running or brisk walking would be the only exercise I could do, but I don’t live in the best neighborhood for young girls to be outside with no adult home.

I personally don’t think I eat much junk food. Occasionally, I’ll have a Kit Kat, but you’ll never see me scarfing down huge bags of chips or those ridiculously huge drinks that I see plenty of kids doing, that happen to be thinner than me! How unfair is that? I’ve never been a big junk food eater.

I’ve been doing research on weight loss and I’ve read plenty of it that says not everyone is wired genetically to be thin. But, you won’t know if you don’t try, right? Even though everyone, except for like 3 people in my family are overweight. And I’m not exaggerating.

I’m lactose intolerant so I avoid milk even though I’ve heard it’s good for maintaining a healthy weight. I’ve drastically cut down on my fried food intake in the past few months, but saw no change. I don’t drink loads of pop or juice. I also don’t drink lots of water. After I drink it, for some unknown reason I can’t pee and it makes my stomach hurt. But I do drink 0 calorie, sugar and carb free Aquafina flavored water when I have it on hand. It’s quite tasty.

I also eat quite a bit of fruit. Peaches and apple especially. Some times watermelon, but not recently. I like vegies too, but we always have apples and such on hand because my mother knows how much I love them and is glad it’s not Twinkies (which are gross) or something like that.

I know that calorie-cutting diets aren’t good for teens since we’re still growing and will be depriving our bodies of nutrients and vitamins, so is there any effective and safe way for a teen to go about losing weight?
I know sports are good exercise too, but I suck at them. I’m not joking. I’m the clumsiest person you will ever meet and I’d rather not break my neck on the basketball court.

I was thinking of begging my mom for a Wii fit for Christmas. They look really fun. And no one else has one. Yay for braggin’ rights!

You seem to have a healthy diet already :D

There are many reasons for sudden weight gain and it’s possibly that maybe you have an underactive thyroid? It’s a genetic disease. What happens is that it’s possible your thyroid is not producing enough hormones that maintain your metabolism and so you gain weight a lot easier/faster, too. (I have it~) If you get the chance, checking with the doctor + getting a blood test could help.

Also, it’s true that calorie cutting isn’t good for teens and since we’re still growing, what we need is exercise. Exercise can also help increase metabolism. Even doing daily jump-ropes and especially excessive hula hooping could help lose weight. Or just regular stuff like daily push ups and sit ups. You just have to make it a habit.

Drinking lots of water is necessary, though. It’s strange that your stomach hurts. If you don’t already, maybe you could try boiling the water or heating it before drinking? And it’s good for females to avoid cold foods as much as possible.

Good luck! <3 And I hope you get that Wii fit~ 8D
